PART I:
KNOWING DEMENTIA:
I sat with a family suffering the confusion and care of a loved one that left them overwhelmed because there is no immediate solution to dealing with this disease. I began to explain what, when, where, and how! I recommend that you arm yourself with this information so you won’t be caught entirely by surprise and not know what to do or even how to think during this crisis. Medical doctors diagnose dementia only if two or more brain functions occur, such as memory and language skills, that experts say can be impaired without losing consciousness.
Some of the diseases that can cause the symptoms of dementia are Alzheimer’s, Vascular Dementia, Frontotemporal Dementia, [or Pick’s Disease], Huntington’s Disease, and Creuzfeldt-Jacob disease. Several other causes can contribute to cognitive displacements such as medications, metabolic problems, endocrine abnormalities, nutritional deficiencies, infections, poisoning, brain tumors, Anoxia, or Hypoxia, affecting the brain’s oxygen supply by reducing or cut-off oxygen. Even though this disease is shared amongst the elderly, it is NOT a normal part of aging.

As I highlight these past two posts, here are a few signs to look out for yourself and others where these signs can be ever so subtle: Memory loss, impaired judgment, difficulties with abstract thinking, faulty reasoning, inappropriate behavior, loss of communication skills, disorientation to time and place, walking, motor skills, balance problems, and neglect of personal hygiene and care for personal safety. Learn and pay attention to these suggestions. There is NO replacement for knowledge. The featured picture illustrates the progressiveness that dementia holds during given periods.
