This book is a crime noir, a story about a Decatur, Georgia, police detective named Laura Jefferies. Laura has been assigned to several missing persons cases, but runs into intensified challenges that introduce her to a man, whom she calls the ‘stranger.’ The ‘stranger’ who appears in and around her life causes tension within the department and among those she works with daily. This is a story of mystery, intrigue, and sheer, gut-wrenching dialogue that opens up ideas, questions, and doubt. The complexity of human behavior and what motivates it is commonplace, but these complexities are rarely addressed or changed. Laura is a skilled and highly intellectual investigator who will not take ‘no’ or ‘I can’t’ for an answer. She interprets the law as it should be, rather than as others want it to be, but the ‘stranger’ knows the ropes and manipulates Laura at every turn.
