Beliefs are values referring to principles or standards of behavior. It can also help you determine what’s essential in your life. Given these principles that influence behaviors, accepting a belief that something exists without proof can become dated or irrelevant. If one occurs, be open-minded enough to consider the need to change. The only way change can happen for you is to buy into the idea that change is necessary and relative.

Our most deeply held beliefs often begin with our parents or someone we respect and look up to for advice and guidance. These learned beliefs remain forever until you realize that an opinion or two no longer works. Being able to self-assess is a plus as you begin to weigh the importance of changing behavior. To work on yourself means to stop waiting for others to change. When this occurs, you remove yourself as a potential influencer, potentially damaging your psyche. As we know, damaged goods become obsolete, but the effects of the damage never leave your subconscious mind. This part of the brain holds all that we are and what we elect to believe and practice. The practice of holding onto a dated and distorted belief can alter one’s personality.

This is hard for me since what I associate with this article is my belief in Christianity through my parents, mostly my mom. Since I was about 14, I always told myself that I would mold my beliefs as I experienced life more. Now at 21, I’ve grown closer to Christianity more than ever before. But there’s always this nagging question in my mind; would I even believe in it if my parents weren’t Christians? It’s not like the belief serves me no purpose. But the way other Christians go about their faith doesn’t always agree with the way I see my life playing out. I believe learning about and getting familiar with other religions will do me good and I’ll continue to live in my version of my faith.
Having the ability to choose simply means that options are available. The privilege to choose births the responsibility of making sound decisions. Beliefs are much like habits in that each beckons the call to reason what’s meant for you, and what’s not. The instrument you choose to follow a belief warrants relevance, and the depth of exposure. If your beliefs honestly serve you in a way that enhances your existence and lifestyle, by all means continue down that path until that belief becomes dated. When that happens, take it as a ‘red flag’ and do what’s necessary to elevate your consciousness. Our goals as people should always be one of self-serving, motivating, and responsible. What our loved ones teach us over time is based on how they have lived their lives. If mistakes were made due to their teachings, the lesson is no longer valid or current. Change can only happen when you decide that something is wrong!
