The absolute truth about an addiction begins with attempts to hide the pain. The pain experienced usually occurs at an early age and manifests over time. Before I move on with this article, I would like to add that addictions come in many forms: eating, gambling, shopping, work, sex, love, and the internet. It seems to me that these examples fall into a behavioral cycle that eventually finds a resting place in your mental psyche, where habits form, and the struggle begins. However, the focus will be on physically damaging and emotionally crippling addictions such as drinking, smoking, and drugs for this article’s sake.
Many prospective clients have called upon me to help them handle their addiction. Some struggle with all of it, and others struggle with one or the other. Either way, there is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately. If a determination has been made, the problem with resolving or curbing the addiction is probable but not promised. The chains that bind are the chains that restrict all you elect to do. With this physical and emotional damage, the outcome is not good. Trying to do this without support or a loving, caring environment makes healing extremely difficult. In my professional opinion, beating habits such as alcoholism and drug abuse starts with admitting that a problem exists. Until that denial is met with a desire to quit and a willingness to do the work, nothing will happen until you make it happen.
