The Art of Silence

Posted on 3 minute read

Is silence a science or an art? However, it could be both; one can consider silencing a science because it reflects heavily upon behavior and how you and others perceive your silence. Therefore, your routine can be affected. On the other hand, if you see silence as an art, it involves the reason for its use. Silence can be an awakening, and listening becomes an advantage.

As for me, the power of silence touches me deeply, even to attempt to write about it because my use of silence is deafening. However, to say nothing could be a way of telling everything. Silence allows for an unsolicited response to an undetermined question. When I exercise the power of silence, those around me are compelled to wonder what’s on my mind. The constant renewal of doubt can separate two individuals until that one person removes all doubt by talking, followed by saying too much, too soon. An argument that breaks the silence code suddenly becomes verbal combat that airs a deep discord of opinion. Silence can be a total communication about nonverbal communication and spiritual connection. Silence also refers to no sounds uttered by anybody in a room or area. Silence is an essential factor in many cultural spectacles, as in certain rituals.

Your silence can be your secret weapon.

In discourse analysis, speakers use brief absences of speech to mark poetic meters’ boundaries. Silence in speech can be due to hesitation, stuttering, self-correction—or a deliberate slowing of speech to clarify or aid the processing of ideas. These are short silences because longer pauses in language occur in interactive roles, reactive tokens, or turn-taking.

According to cultural norms relative to religious-based genres, silence can be positive or negative. For example, in a Christian Methodist faith organization, calm and reflection during the sermons might be appreciated by the congregation. In contrast, silence might mean disagreement in a Southern Baptist church or perhaps achieving a disconnect from the church assembly entirely. When used correctly, quiet is the formula for the meaningful intent to make a valid reference point. I often use this tool when I speak and teach this valued tool in my seminars. Are you that person that listens in silence, or are you that same person who loves to hear himself talk that is void of meaning? You will find that many people will fear your SILENCE. Overall, I believe you can listen to silence and learn from it. Are you afraid yet? Just imagine what I’ll say next regarding your measure of understanding silence. Start guessing!
