Looking back on my life and the hardships I faced helped me along my journey. Whether it was advice, direct guidance, or one of opportunity, none of us can make it alone. However, for many of us, we tend to forget from whence we came, and what should follow is that all-important reminder to ‘give back.’
If you haven’t noticed, our kids are suffering. The emotional upheavals that teens face speak to unsightly developments that cripple, hinder, and isolate them. Our kids’ future is questionable through these dynamic sequences, and for far too many, hopeless. With nothing to look forward to or a means to build bridges over creating earthquakes, our black youth require attention sooner rather than later. The young benefiting reality is that I equate children with ‘wet cement.’ When cement is wet, it can be molded and formed, and when that same cement has hardened, the shaping you were responsible for no longer exists.
As I interact with teens and young adults, I often see a complete sense of unawareness. Their links to real-life issues and how to handle them are missing leaving these individuals uninformed, uneducated, and lost. The information highway for blacks is limited but often considered obsolete because of their lack of exposure. Consequently, they are left with nothing and unable to compete in modern society. It’s no secret that this modern age of technology is quickly removing jobs previously pursued by young people in the fields of service. Fast-food chains, delivery services, and ordering practices have all reached ‘high tech’ dimensions, followed by takeovers.
To avoid this avalanche of disappointment, training to certify in the field of technology is a must. Learning the skills to write programs, build mechanical objects such as robotic engineering, and continuously trending calls for preparation.
High tech training that facilitates certification can be just as rewarding as a degree, but that must begin now for these kids to embrace this run-on technical know-how. Therefore, it is our job as responsible adults, the baby-boomer generation, in particular, to see that it happens.
